Gill Parker Payne, the 37-year-old man from North Carolina who ripped off a Muslim woman's hijab during a Southwest Airlines flight in December 2015 has pleaded guilty in the District of New Mexico to one count of using force or threat of force to intentionally obstruct a Muslim woman in the free exercise of her religious beliefs. Payne and the woman, identified as K.A. in court documents, were aboard a flight from Chicago to Albuquerque, New Mexico. While the plane was still in-flight, Payne, who was seated several rows behind K.A., walked up to the aisle where she was sitting and demanded she take off her hijab, reportedly saying, "Take it off! This is America!" When she did not remove the headscarf, Payne grabbed the hijab and pulled it all the way off, leaving her head exposed. According to a press release from the Department of Justice, Payne was aware that wearing a headscarf is a religious practice of Muslim women and admitted that he saw K.A. wearing the hijab.
