Amrik Singh Bal, a 68-year-old Sikh man, was verbally and physically assaulted while waiting for his ride to go to work. Two men who saw him jumped out of their car and began punching him, beating him in the face, and cursing at him. The men then got back in their car and ran over him, causing his head to hit the pavement, where he lay unconscious for about six minutes, until he was found. He had a broken collarbone, cuts on his head, and a swollen jaw. The two suspects were found three months later. One committed suicide in April, after pleading not guilty, and the other was found guilty of a hate crime in October. The prosecutor argued that it was a hate crime due to Bal’s faith and his clothing, and that one of the attackers said to the other: “ISIS. Terrorist. Let’s get him.”
