A year ago on Independence Day, a Muslim woman was kicked and strip-searched by police officers during her commute home. The woman, Itemad “Angel” Almatar, was carrying a backpack full of food at the time, as the holy month of Ramadan was winding to a close. She said she was running to catch a train July 4 when police profiled her and threw her onto a flight of stairs. Surveillance footage from the scene then shows the officers conducting a strip search, and the woman also said the officers asked her invasive questions, such as why she's fasting and why she's Muslim. Almatar was arrested on the spot and charged with reckless conduct and resisting arrest, but was found not guilty of these charges June 29. She said she plans on filing a federal civil rights lawsuit soon.
