A Muslim member of the Australian parliament, Dr. Mehreen Faruqi, was separated from her husband by security officials at Los Angeles International Airport and questioned for an hour. Authorities reportedly demanded to know how she “actually got” her Australian passport, as well as grilling her on her Pakistani history and asking for a second form of identity. Faruqi, who was visiting the U.S. to see family and participate in a self-funded fact-finding trip on drug law reform, called the process “humiliating” and evidence of racial and religious profiling.
